About the role
Shopify’s Solutions Engineers are trusted technical advisors who blend technical curiosity, business acumen, and high-trust communication to help merchants design and adopt the right commerce solutions.
As a Senior Solutions Engineer on the APAC Solution Engineering team, you’ll support merchants across Australia and New Zealand through complex, multi-stakeholder commerce decisions. You’ll run discovery, shape solution strategy, reduce technical uncertainty, and help merchants understand what’s possible with Shopify.
This is not a role for someone who only wants to run polished demos. We’re looking for someone who can think deeply, build practically, explain clearly, challenge constructively, and move with urgency.
The APAC team operates with a high degree of self-sufficiency. Time zones, market complexity, and regional scale mean our best Solutions Engineers are commercially aware, technically curious, hands-on, collaborative, and comfortable using AI as a daily multiplier.
Key responsibilities
Lead deep technical discovery with merchants and partners, mapping current-state workflows, systems, requirements, constraints, risks, and success metrics.
Translate merchant needs into practical solution architectures across Shopify and the broader commerce stack, including online store, checkout, POS, B2B, Markets, payments, APIs, apps, integrations, ERP/OMS/WMS, fulfilment, and partner-built solutions.
Help merchants understand migration paths from legacy platforms and the practical implications for architecture, operations, integrations, and launch readiness.
Create tailored demos, prototypes, diagrams, workshops, proof points, and technical narratives that connect Shopify capabilities to merchant-specific outcomes.
Partner with Account Executives, Solution Partners, Product, Launch, CSM, and regional teams to shape opportunity strategy, remove blockers, support technical validation, and translate field feedback into useful product and market insights.
Use AI and agentic workflows to accelerate SE work, including merchant research, account prep, transcript synthesis, technology stack analysis, demo planning, technical validation, content drafting, and follow-up.
Build or adapt lightweight AI-enabled tools, prompts, workflows, demos, scripts, or reusable assets, while validating AI output for security, privacy, correctness, and merchant impact.
Apply sound judgment to know when to go deep, when to simplify, when to bring in specialists, and when to challenge assumptions.
Contribute to team leverage through reusable assets, documentation, enablement, and shared AI patterns.
Qualifications
Strong experience in solutions engineering, sales engineering, technical consulting, commerce technology, implementation consulting, solutions architecture, or a related role.
Deep curiosity about commerce and how merchants operate across online, retail, omnichannel, fulfilment, inventory, payments, customer experience, and growth.
Strong technical judgment across APIs, integrations, data flows, authentication, webhooks, SaaS architecture, and modern commerce ecosystems.
Ability to understand merchant systems across people, process, data, and technology, and design for adoption and outcomes rather than feature delivery alone.
Experience working with developers, architects, executives, sales teams, delivery partners, and cross-functional technical stakeholders.
Strong commercial acumen, with the ability to connect technical recommendations to merchant value, implementation reality, revenue, efficiency, growth, or risk reduction.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to turn complexity into clear, simple stories for both executive and technical audiences.
Strong discovery and relationship-building instincts. You can find the real problem behind a stated requirement, earn trust, read the room, build champions, and navigate tension.
Comfort with ambiguity, fast change, self-directed learning, and operating in a regionally distributed team.
Evidence that you use AI tools thoughtfully and practically, without over-relying on them as a replacement for technical thinking, customer empathy, or sound recommendations.
Ability to operate from Australia and travel as needed for customer meetings, partner engagements, team offsites, and company events.
Nice to haves
Experience with Shopify, commerce platforms, POS, ERP, OMS, WMS, payments, retail operations, B2B commerce, CDP, marketplaces, or integration-heavy environments.
Experience in ANZ enterprise or mid-market commerce, retail, or technology sales cycles.
Familiarity with JavaScript, Liquid, React, GraphQL, REST APIs, SQL, or similar technologies.
Ability to build small things that clarify feasibility or create leverage, such as prototypes, scripts, internal tools, demo stores, prompt chains, lightweight apps, or technical proof points.
Practical experience with AI-assisted development or workflow tools such as Claude, Cursor, Gemini, NotebookLM, internal agents, MCP-style workflows, or similar.
Experience working with partners or agencies in a co-selling, implementation, or delivery model.
Track record of creating reusable assets, team enablement, documentation, internal systems, or workflows that make others better.
